Ireland and the UK have just witnessed a major milestone in medical technology. Surgeons at University Hospital Galway in Ireland performed the first robot-guided coronary intervention, a procedure that helps relieve blockages in the heart’s arteries. This new technology, known as CorPath, enables medical staff to position the stent with exceptional precision and accuracy, all while giving them a close-up view of the angiographic images and information during the procedure.

According to Prof Faisal Sharif, the consultant cardiologist who carried out the procedure, robotics has come a long way in the last decade and has proven to be safe and precise in stent placement. The use of robotics also helps hospital staff reduce their exposure to radiation, as the procedure is usually performed in the cardiac cath lab.

This innovative technology is transforming the way medical care is delivered, and the University of Galway is at the forefront of this change. The successful first surgery performed using CorPath has opened the door for more of these procedures to be performed regularly in the future. The University of Galway, University Hospital Galway, and the Science Foundation Ireland were instrumental in making this technological breakthrough a reality.
